Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and necessary for financial literacy for most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Through delivery of the National Curriculum for Mathematics and employing a blend of Mastery Learning and TEEP pedagogy, our intent is that all St. Peter’s pupils will experience enjoyment and confidence in their mathematical challenges so that they can:
-develop a fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice that enhances their ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
-reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry to develop an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
-solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems of increasing sophistication using resilience and determination to seek solutions.
We aim to facilitate all pupils in meeting their full mathematical potential regardless of their starting point by employing concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches which are facilitated by the promotion of social justice and growth mind-set. We wish for pupils completing their studies to feel fully prepared for the mathematical endeavours beyond high school that they will encounter within their chosen career pathways.
At St. Peter’s RC High School, we believe that mixed attainment classrooms facilitate the opportunity for social justice that in turn, enable children to learn without limits. Therefore, regardless of prior attainment, we aim to provide all pupils access to the same rich curriculum to provide equality of opportunity.
Our KS3 mastery curriculum is delivered in mixed attainment classes as experienced by pupils in Primary School. This gives the opportunity for all pupils to reach their full mathematical potential in readiness for their transition into KS4 GCSE studies.
After each topic, every pupil will be tested to check their progress and inform intervention. Clearly defined curricular targets are set for each individual to develop identified areas for improvement. A termly summative assessment will provide pupils with a clear indicator of their current progress in relation to their starting point along with gaps in their knowledge.
Homework is set online through maths-related applications that provide immediate feedback. These are set once per week and additional independent study which is highly recommended is always available through homework platforms used and our Teams channels.
Students study the KS4 National Curriculum for Mathematics via GCSE Edexcel Mathematics 9-1 (Higher Tier) or GCSE OCR Mathematics 9-1 (Foundation Tier). At the end of Year 9 pupils are set into two Higher, one Crossover and one Foundation tier set per band that provides all pupils with the opportunity to progress beyond their target grade set, thus providing equality of opportunity for all.
Schemes of Learning are tailored to ensure that all learners have an ambitious curriculum diet regardless of prior attainment where unit content is aligned between tiers to allow for set changes along the journey.
In line with our ethos of promoting social justice and equality, setting is reviewed at the end of each term and adjustments are made based on individual performance.
Homework is set online once per week through Maths Watch which provides instant feedback that helps diagnose misconceptions to inform teachers for their planning to accelerate progress. Additional homework is always available online using our online platforms and Teams channels.
By the time they complete their studies with us at St Peter’s High School, pupils will have the required skills, knowledge and understanding to access the next steps in their chosen career pathway where they may study:
