Ethos

The ability to make sense of data is an essential skill for working life and full citizenship in a modern society. Statistics at St Peter’s is about empowering students to make well informed decisions when there is uncertainty. As perhaps one of the most versatile areas of maths, it gives students the skills to collect, analyse, interpret and present data.

Aims

Our aim is to provide an engaging and inspiring curriculum that allows students to:

  • Use statistical techniques in a variety of authentic investigations using real world data in contexts.
  • Apply statistical techniques across the curriculum in subjects such as science, computing, geography and business, as well as outside of the classroom.
  • Critically evaluate data, calculations and evaluations that would be commonly encountered in their studies and in everyday life.
  • Understand how technology has enabled the collection, presentation and analysis of large quantities of data to inform decision-making processes in public, commercial and academic sectors.

Progression

A qualification in statistics can open many doors. Statistics are used to clarify research issues, identify trends and quantify their effects. The results can influence local, national and international policy. Careers include:

  • Government
  • Medical and pharmaceutical research
  • Environmental science
  • The life sciences
  • The social sciences
  • Industry, business, commerce, finance, actuarial work.

 

GCSE Statistics also aids progression to A level mathematics and facilitates understanding of S1 and S2 modules.

Curriculum Intent

Students who choose to study GCSE statistics receive 5 lessons a fortnight and follow the Edexcel 9-1 GCSE specification.

Assessment

The Edexcel GCSE (9–1) in Statistics consists of two externally-examined papers. Students must complete all assessment in May/June in any single year, and students can be entered for either Foundation tier or Higher tier. There is no coursework component to the course.
