Textile Design engages, motivates and challenges pupils, to explore their creativity.

Within this area of Art and Design pupils have the opportunity to use a variety of media including ICT to develop their creative skills.

Aims

Our aim is to provide a challenging and enriching experience which will allow pupils to:

  • develop their creative and practical skills
  • work confidently and independently
  • become responsible, competent, confident, creative designers able to use a range of mixed media, tools and equipment
  • analyse given problems and produce solutions using their gained knowledge, skills and understanding

 


KS3 Curriculum 2017-2018


Year 7

Year 7 pupils spend eight weeks in the department, and gain experience in using a variety of different materials, both in 2D and 3D. This will create a firm foundation for further development in year 8. The pupils will cover a variety of colour transfer methods; tie & dye, stencilling, paint spray, hand embroidery and CAD/CAM. These will be developed through a cultural theme.

Year 8

During year 8 pupils will build on their skills from year 7, learning to work more independently and creatively. The pupils will look at both historical and modern day costume design and they will focus on both design and techniques. Over the eight week rotation pupils will complete a series of textiles deign workshops; printing and dying, appliqué, hand embroidery and CAD/CAM.

 


KS4 Curriculum 2017-2018


Year 9

In Year 9, pupils begin studying textile design by working on several short projects which will develop skills in a variety of disciplines which will form the groundwork for GCSE.

Years 10 & 11

In Year 10 and Year 11, pupils will work towards their AQA GCSE Art & Design (Textiles) qualification.

Pupils are required to complete two components. Component 1 is a Portfolio which must include a sustained project evidencing the journey from initial engagement to the realisation of intentions and a selection of further work undertaken during the pupil’s course of study. Component 2 is an externally set assignment by the exam board.

The areas of study are listed below. Pupils are required to study one or more of the following areas. They may explore overlapping and combinations of areas.

 

  • Art textiles
  • Fashion design and illustration
  • Costume design
  • Constructed textiles
  • Printed and dyed textiles
  • Surface pattern
  • Stitched and/or embellished textiles
  • Soft furnishings and/or textiles for interiors
  • Digital textiles
  • Installed textiles.

 

Assessment:

Component 1 – Portfolio

Non-exam assessment (NEA) set and marked by the school and moderated by AQA during a visit. Moderation will normally take place in June of Year 11.

  • No time limit
  • 60% of GCSE

 

Component 2 – Externally set assignment:

 

Non-exam assessment (NEA) set by AQA; marked by the school and moderated by AQA during a visit. Moderation will normally take place in June of Year 11.

  • Preparatory period followed by 10 hours of supervised time
  • 40% of GCSE
