Hyde Road (A57) widening scheme - traffic-calming measures

Dear Resident.

I am writing to you regarding the above scheme. This will widen the section of the A57 between Far Lane and Wall Way, where the road currently reduces from four lanes to two. This pinch point causes significant congestion and delay, particularly at peak travel times.

During the scheme, the Hyde Road bridge (which carried the Fallow field Loop) will be removed and replaced with a new longer bridge. A new pelican crossing will also be installed on Hyde Road to replace the old one.

Eric Wright Civil Engineering Ltd has been appointed as contractor for the scheme, and work will commence in January 2020 and last approximately 12 months. During this time there will be traffic management in place on Hyde Road, which will keep two lanes of traffic running (one in each direction) for most of the scheme. However, there will need to be a localised road closure during the demolition of the bridge. This will take place over a weekend early in the scheme; the road will also need to be closed during the placement of the new bridge, which will be done overnight towards the end of the scheme. Details of the closure will be provided in due course.

Concerns have been raised about the ‘rat running' that occurs through the local estate roads by commuters wishing to avoid queuing on Hyde Road. As part of the scheme, we will be installing no entry signs at the entrance of woodland Road and Dean Road, and Abbeywood Avenue will be converted into a northbound (onto Hyde Road) one-way system. Please see the diagram overleaf for the locations of the roadblocks.

These traffic-calming measures will be installed prior to the main work commencing and will remain in place throughout the duration of the scheme.

Access to all for businesses, properties and emergency services will always be maintained via diversion routes.

Once completed, the scheme will significantly reduce delays, disruption and congestion in both directions of travel, and will also reduce journey times, particularly at peak travel hours. Fully signalled pedestrian facilities will be maintained throughout the scheme.
