Ethos
Art & Design and Graphics are inspiring, practical subjects that engage, motivate and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for a career in the creative industry. Within these subjects, pupils have the opportunity to develop their skills in a wide range of media, techniques and processes including drawing and painting, print, 3D and Digital Manipulation.
Aims
Our aim is that all pupils will be able to:
- develop their creative skills in a wide range of media to allow themselves to independently select and develop personalised project work as they mature in KS4
- become responsible, competent, confident, safe and creative users of tools and equipment
- analyse themes and questions and develop a creative response when applying their knowledge, skills and understanding
KS3 Curriculum 2019-2020
Year 7
Year 7 pupils spend eight weeks in both Art & Design and Graphics, during which time they are introduced to Health and Safety requirements, the Design Process, and the correct and safe use of a wide range of materials, techniques and processes. They will cover areas and processes in Art and Graphics
Year 8
Year 8 pupils spend eight weeks in both Art & Design and Graphics, during which time they will review and recap their knowledge to Health and Safety requirements, the Design Process, and extend their learning and knowledge of further materials, and more in depth and difficult techniques and processes.
KS4 Curriculum 2019-2020
Year 9
In Year 9 pupils will begin an 18 week intensive skills programme designed to prepare them for KS4 Art & Design projects. On a rotation carousel throughout the department pupils will complete 6 week long workshops in the following areas:
- Art - focused on improving drawing skills
- Graphic Design - Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Textiles
Once these workshops are complete pupils will possess the broad range of skills required, to begin working independently on their assessable Art & Design units. They will start by producing a project from the starting point of Natural forms..
Year 10 and Year 11
In Year 10 and Year 11, Pupils will work towards their AQA GCSE Art & Design qualification.
This is a broad course exploring practical and critical/contextual work through a range of 2D and/or 3D processes and new media and technologies. It is an unendorsed course where candidates can work in appropriate art, craft and design materials and processes.
This course provides a strong foundation for further progression to Art and Design related courses such as A-level Art and Design and enhanced vocational and career pathways.
Assessment: Unit 1 (Portfolio Work) Controlled Assessment which is worth 60% of the total marks. Unit 2 (Externally Set Task) Exam which is worth 40% of the total marks. All work is internally assessed and externally moderated.
