Ethos
Art & Design and Graphics are inspiring, practical subjects that engage, motivate and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required for a career in the creative industry. Within these subjects, pupils have the opportunity to develop their skills in a wide range of media, techniques and processes including drawing and painting, print, 3D and Digital Manipulation.
Aims
Our aim is that all pupils will be able to:
- develop their creative skills in a wide range of media to allow themselves to independently select and develop personalised project work as they mature in KS4
- become responsible, competent, confident, safe and creative users of tools and equipment
- analyse themes and questions and develop a creative response when applying their knowledge, skills and understanding
KS3 Curriculum 2019-2020
Year 7
Year 7 pupils spend eight weeks in both Art & Design and Graphics, during which time they are introduced to Health and Safety requirements, the Design Process, and the correct and safe use of a wide range of materials, techniques and processes. They will cover areas and processes in Art and Graphics
Year 8
Year 8 pupils spend eight weeks in both Art & Design and Graphics, during which time they will review and recap their knowledge to Health and Safety requirements, the Design Process, and extend their learning and knowledge of further materials, and more in depth and difficult techniques and processes.
KS4 Curriculum 2019-2020
Year 9
In Year 9 pupils will begin an 18 week intensive skills programme designed to prepare them for KS4 Art & Design projects. On a rotation carousel throughout the department pupils will complete 6 week long workshops in the following areas:
- Art - focused on improving drawing skills
- Graphic Design - Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Textiles
Once these workshops are complete pupils will possess the broad range of skills required, to begin working independently on their assessable Art & Design units. They will start by producing a project from the starting point of Natural forms.
Years 10 & 11
In Years 10 and Year 11, pupils will work towards their AQA GCSE in Art & Design (Art, Craft and Design).
Pupils are required to complete two components. Component 1 is a Portfolio which must show evidence of working in areas of study from two or more of the topics listed below taking into account the distinguishing characteristics of art, craft and design. Component 2 must show evidence of areas of study drawn from one or more of the topics listed below and is an externally set assignment by the exam board.
Pupils will explore and create work associated with at least two of the areas listed below:
- Fine Art
- Graphic communication
- Textile design
- Three dimensional design
- Photography
Assessment:
Component 1 – Portfolio
Non-exam assessment (NEA) set and marked by the school and moderated by AQA during a visit. Moderation will normally take place in June of Year 11.
- No time limit
- 60% of GCSE
Component 2 – Externally set assignment:
Non-exam assessment (NEA) set by AQA; marked by the school and moderated by AQA during a visit. Moderation will normally take place in June of Year 11.
- Preparatory period followed by 10 hours of supervised time
- 40% of GCSE
